THE CSO HAS released the list of the most popular baby names of 2016 in Ireland.
The top 5 most popular male and female names of 2016 include James, Jack, Emily and Grace.
As always, there’s a huge number of hipster baby names on the rise
1. Oisín
This was the 8th most popular boys name of 2016 which means one thing: soft drink sales will go through the roof in about 16 years when all the boys in Clongowes are shouting “Oisín, mate, do you want a soft drink?”
You know this one has become truly very popular because if you go into any Avoca branch in the country you’re guaranteed to cross a posh mam with an Orla Kiely bag who is saying “Not now, Oisín” with a look of utter resignation, while her son wreaks havoc in the restaurant.
2. Fiadh
Ranking 24th in the girls names this year, up from 35th place in 2015, Fiadh is the Irish word for deer. Looks like junior infants classes in the year 2020 will resemble the Phoenix Park with the amount of deers they’ll have to accommodate.
3. Matilda
Up from spot 146 in 2015 to 97th place in 2016, we’re seeing just how much of an impact the 1996 kids film had on women born in the 1990s. Everyone wants a precocious child with the skill of telekinesis. Can’t blame them, it’s a really good film.
4. Lara
In 93rd place, once again, it’s suspicious that the 90′s kids who are now of childbearing age are naming their kids after cultural icons of the time. This name must be inspired by Tomb Raider. I think we should all be aiming to raise our children to be more like Lara Croft.
5. Leo
In 45th place, we have the name Leo for a boy. Please proceed to the next name and see what is in 46th place.
6. Oscar
Yes. In 2016 Leonardo Dicaprio finally won his first Oscar. In 2016 the names Leo and Oscar came up almost equally on Irish birth certs. Bizarre coincidence. Imagine how many kids called Leo and Oscar will become best friends in primary school while their mams jokingly reference to the whole Leonardo Dicaprio Oscar fiasco.
7. Evie
In 39th place, up 15 spots from the previous year, we have the girls name Evie. Have a strange feeling this may have had something to do with Pokémon Go.
8. Willow
The name Willow rose almost 50 places higher on the list in 2016, where it ranked at the 72nd most popular name in comparison to the previous years 121th spot. At first we were kind of joking about 90′s culture influencing names, but this is further evidence that it could be true. Now all we need are a few girls called Buffy and Dawn and a lad named Xander.
9. Rose and Rosie
In 2016 there were 84 tots called Rose born and a further 68 named Rosie. Now just nickname all of the boys called James (which was the most popular name of the year) Jim and teach those children how to drive a barge, like the beloved puppet duo Rosie and Jim.
10. Donnacha
Perhaps this was inspired by the two Irish Rugby Union players of the same name.
11. Harper
In 2015 this was the 102nd most popular name and in 2016 it was the 65th most popular. That’s quite a jump.
12. Louis
From 106th place to 78th place, Louis made one of the biggest jumps in popularity when it came to boys names in 2016.
13. Zoey/Zoe
It would have been nice if Zoey was in 101st place. Like Zoey 101. However, Zoey is in 97th place, a decent jump from the previous years 123rd most popular name. In 26th place, was Zoe without the ‘Y’.
14. Heidi
This year there were 72 little babies called Heidi, in contrast to the previous years 57.
15. Hugo
Hugo previously entered the top 100 and has been hanging in there since, with 82 boys called Hugo on 2016 birth certs across the country.
